FIP-IPS Activities
The International Federation of Pharmacy (FIP) is the single organization uniting all pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists worldwide. The Industrial Pharmacy Section (IPS) focuses on the development; manufacturing and regulatory aspects of Pharmaceuticals.
The FIP CONGRESS comes to China in 2007. These unique four parallel FIP-INDUSTRIAL PHARMACY workshops will bring to the participants the most up-to-date information in manufacturing, QC/QA and regulation of pharmaceuticals. Forty Five International Distinguished Chairs and Speakers from the WHO; USP; EC; Chinese, U.S., German, Canadian Universities; U. S., European and Chinese Manufacturers of Pharmaceuticals, Raw Materials, Excipients, Polymers, Instruments and Equipment for the Manufacturing and Quality Control of Pharmaceuticals; FDA , Chinese SFDA and GD-FDA Senior Scientists will share their experiences. The presented topics include, but not limited to, Modern Technologies in the Pre- Formulation; Manufacturing and QC/QA of Tablets and Parenteral Products, Biotech and Nanotechnology, PROCESS ANALYTICAL TECHNOLOGY, Extended Release Technology, Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) in the 21st Century in US, EU and Canada, Quality by Design, Quality Risk Management, WHO, USP and FDA perspectives, etc.
This is the first time in the FIP-Industrial Pharmacy Workshops that the WHO, USP, FDA and GD-FDA take an active role in the participation and presentations.

Prof. Dr. Adel Sakr is the Director of the Industrial Pharmacy Graduate Program at the College of Pharmacy, University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Cincinnati, USA. He has 40 years of international academic and industrial experiences, more than 146 internationally published research papers; and presented more than 350 conference presentations, invited presentations and /or workshops. Professor Sakr is an elected Fellow of AAPS and Graduate Fellow of the University of Cincinnati. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award of the University of Cincinnati and has been awarded DOCTOR HONORIS CAUSA in the year 2000. Dr. Sakr is Congress Chair, FIP-Industrial Pharmacy Section.
Dr. Tom Sam is currently Director Global Regulatory CMC, NV Organon, the Netherlands. He was head of Organon’s Pharmaceutics “Novel Dosage Forms” and “Solid Dosage Forms” Sections for many years. He is president of FIP’s Industrial Pharmacy Section, member of the WHO Expert Committee on Specifi cations of Pharmaceutical Preparations, moderator of the Quality module of the European Regulatory Affairs course, and organizer of the European Symposia on Controlled Drug Delivery. He is a member of the AAPS focus groups Regulatory Science and Manufacturing/Engineering & Quality.
Dr. Claudia Rijcken is a pharmacist by training and in 2003 she finished her Ph.D. within the field of schizophrenia research. Dr. Rijcken additionally acquired an executive MBA in health administration. After working for several years as managerial head of a community pharmacy, in 2005 she switched to industrial pharmacy. She started within the Dutch company Organon as a study director for global clinical trials in the realm of Neuroscience. Currently, she is employed as Expert Clinical Manager at Novartis, Switzerland. Dr. Rijcken is member of the ExCo of the Industrial Pharmacy Section of FIP and board member of the Dutch Industrial Pharmacists Association.
Prof. Dr. Michael Anisfeld is a senior consultant for Globepharm Consulting specializing in GMP/Quality activities for the healthcare manufacturing industries. In his current position he numbers among his clients United Nations Agencies (WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNIDO), national regulatory agencies (including the Chinese SFDA, US-FDA, Australian TGA) and over 260 pharmaceutical, medical device, biotechnology and bulk pharmaceutical companies in the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia.
Dr. Mathew Cherian is Director of Pharmaceutical Development Services for Patheon Inc, a world leader in pharmaceutical development and manufacturing services for the pharmaceutical industry. He has over 22 years of experience in pharmaceutical R&D. Trained as a chemical engineer, Dr. Cherian has held leadership positions in sterile product development at leading pharmaceutical companies like Pharmacia and Pfi zer. His interests include aseptic processing, lipid- based drug delivery and biologics. He has several patents, publications and presentations to his credit. Dr. Cherian is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, and Controlled Release Society.

Director Jing Hua Zhang is the Deputy Director of Guangdong Food and Drug Administration in charge of anti-counterfeit and product registration. He is also the National GMP Inspector of China State Food and Drug Administration. Mr. Zhang used to be visiting Scholar in California State University Sacramento USA major in Executive Management and drug administration Regulations. He also participated in Pharmacovigilance training Course “WHO-UMC at TGA” in Canberra, Australia. In the past 8 years or more Mr. Zhang had made big effort in promoting the internalization of China pharmaceutical industry and achieved big progress in pharmaceutical development for Guangdong province.
Prof. Dr. Xinyong Liu is currently a professor at the Institute of Medicinal Chemistry, School
of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Shandong University. His research work is partly engaged in
the design and synthesis of a variety of molecules targeted at the specifi c enzymes and receptors. At present time, He is focusing on the design and synthesis of novel HIV-1 non-
nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, as well as the design and synthesis of new HIV-
1 transactivation inhibitors based on HIV-1Tat-TAR interaction in the viral transcription step.
His second ongoing program is synthesis of some natural products from Chinese Traditional
Medicine active in cerebro/cardio vascular biology.
Prof. Dr. Wan-Liang Lu is Deputy Chairman of Department of Pharmaceutics at School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Peking University. He was Scientist at National University of Singapore, International Medical Center of Johns Hopkins Singapore, and Toyama University. His research on pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics resulted in 80 research papers, more than 10 book chapters, and patent applications.
Prof. Guoan Luo is Director of Modern Research Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tsinghua University, Member of State Pharmacopeia Commission and Associate Editor-in- chief of the Pharmacopoeia of P.R.China. His research interests are focused on the Traditional Chinese Medicine and bio-analytical chemistry. Till now, Prof. Luo has published more than 440 peer-reviewed papers, fi led 30 patents and obtained over 10 National or provincial awards for his achievements in science and technology.
Prof. Dr. Wen-fang Xu is a distinguished Professor of Shandong University, Standing Dean and Director of Institute of Medicinal Chemistry of School of Pharmaceutical Sciences Shandong University. In his current position he numbers among his clients National Anticancer Society for Anticancer Agent Division, SFDA for New Drugs Evaluation Committee, National Pharmaceutical Society for Medicinal Chemistry Division, Associate Chief Member Chinese Ministry of Ein China.

FIP-IPS Activities: 2005/2006

In Brazil, 2006, the Industrial Pharmacy Section in co-operation with Febrafarma (the Brazilian association for pharmaceutical industries) organized pre-satellite workshops in Sao Paolo, which were meant to be continuing education for industrial pharmacists all over the world. Topics of these 2-days workshops involved Good Manufacturing Practice, advances in Tabletting and Advances in Parenterals. The workshops were visited by almost 200 pharmacists, many of whom are working in the field of production and/or quality. The audience was a nice mix of mainly Brazilian employees of various global pharmaceutical companies (Wyeth, Pfi zer, Lilly, Novartis, Organon etc.), which led to effi cient sharing of knowledge, a wide variety of discussion topics and very interactive workshops.

After these successful workshops, the congress in Salvador de Bahia was ready to start. Two- thousand pharmacists from all over the world joined FIP. IPS organized several industry-related symposia and awarded the best presentation on curriculum and on pharmaceutical science; the winners were respectively Ms. Sally Makady from Egypt and Ms. Lucie Novakova from the Czech Republic. Additionally, we received 50 IPS related posters, of which the jury chose the one from Ms. Lourena Verissimo from Brazil as the best poster presentation.
